All About EveAnd the LORD God said, It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper comparable to him. (Genesis 2:18) In the 1950 Bette Davis classic All About Eve, an ingenue insinuates herself into the company of an established but aging actress and her circle of friends. Woody Allen once joked that Marriage is an institution, and I don't want to live in an institution. That may be Hollywoods version, but God created Eve and the institution of marriage so that Adam would not be alone. Marriage is ordained by God because it was God, not Adam, who said that it was not good for man to be alone. In Genesis, God said good to everything He created but on the sixth day when Adam was created God said, It is not good that man should be alone. God did not mean to say that man was not created well, He meant that it was not good because there was just one man. Only half of man was created so God created a female helper for Adam on the sixth day so he could keep in touch with his feminine side. The word helper in Hebrew means someone who matches, someone who renders help. Eve was made on the sixth day from Adams rib to be equal to him, and not from his feet to be stepped on like a Persian rug nor from his head to outsmart him. And Eve was brought by God like Steve Martin in The Father of the Bride to Adam. She was custom made expressly for the purpose of marriage and children and not for casual sex, incest, rape, abortion, lesbianism, prostitution, pornography, shacking up or living together with no possibility that is so prevalent in todays sinful world. In reading Genesis 2:18, many of us think that when God created man, He created a male plus a female but the Bible says only that God created man. Gods creation of man was His creation of male and female because His Hebrew name Elohim is plural and is both male and female. The male and female made a complete man and thats why God said in Genesis 1:26 let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness. It was as if God created half of a man in the beginning and then the better half after seeing that man was only half as good without a woman. The two halves were joined together to become one, and only after they were joined together was man complete and whole and be the best that he could ever be. This is why God did not say that it was good until Eve was made. God then commanded that a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. (Genesis 2:24) This shows us that marriage is not initiated by a man or a woman but by God Almighty Himself. And to those who think being gay is OK, God created Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve. The institution of marriage did not come after Adams fall but before it. Man did not sin on the first day of his creation, he was married to a woman on the first day of his creation. On the same day that God created Eve, He gave her to Adam in holy matrimony to have and to hold, to cherish and nourish as a beloved wife (Ephesians 5:25-29), and that is the truth of All About Eve.Copyright © 2003 Eddy Ministries.
