Father of the Bride

Let us be glad and rejoice and give Him glory, for the marriage of the Lamb has come, and His wife has made herself ready...Blessed are those who are called to the marriage supper of the Lamb!” (Revelation 19:7-9)

In the 1991 remake of the 1950 Spencer Tracy classic Father of the Bride, Steve Martin is a nervous father unready to face the fact that his little girl Kimberly Williams is now a grown woman about to get married. That may be Hollywood's version with remakes, sequels and the gay wedding planner, but God is the ultimate Father of the Bride. Brides and marriages are important to God because His Word refers to the church or believers as the bride of Christ. (2 Corinthians 11:2)

Before we betroth ourselves to Him, the Holy Spirit first introduces us (1 Corinthians 12:3) because God our heavenly Father wants us to know His only Son Jesus. Father God even sets up the first date in John 6:44 in an incredible display of the interactions of the Holy Trinity. God the Father is also there to witness the holy matrimony of His Son as we say, “I do” to Jesus when we confess Him out loud as Lord and Saviour according to Romans 10:9-10. Once we are married, God then makes us not just His children endowed with a trust fund called In God We Trust, but also elevates us to be His heirs to an inheritance full of glory that was established from the foundation of the world, and joint heirs with Christ [The Anointed One and His anointing]. (Romans 8:17)

Even though we come to Jesus from all walks of life as a not so perfect bride because of our sins, He removes our spots, wrinkles, blemishes, warts and all better than Botox or a Beverly Hills plastic surgeon and makes us pure and chaste Like A Virgin, not by Madonna but by His grace and mercy. Jesus did this to present us to Himself as a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that we should be holy and without blemish. (Ephesians 5:27). God the Father further says, “Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red like crimson, they shall be as wool.” (Isaiah 1:18)

We are cleansed not by our good works, good karma, good looks or good intentions, but only by Jesus’ precious and sinless Blood with blood type G. Just as a satisfying and lasting marriage can be built only on the basis of total commitment to each other, so a fulfilling relationship with Christ can be built only on total commitment to Him. A bride should love, honor, respect and obey her husband. As the Bride of Christ, we should also love, honor and obey the Word of our heavenly and eternal bridegroom, Lord Jesus Christ, who saved us by His grace and loved us so much that He endured the crucifixion and died on the cross for us.
