Jonah: Not a Veggie Tales Movie

“Therefore I fled previously to Tarshish; for I know that You are a gracious and merciful God, slow to anger and abundant in lovingkindness, One who relents from doing harm.” (Jonah 4:2)

Hollywood may have produced Jonah: A Veggie Tales Movie in 2002, but the original Jonah story in the Bible is about biggies, not veggies. Jonah was a story about a big fish and a big ego that led to disobedience with God. Jonah was a prophet of God who decided that he was too good to prophesy salvation to his enemies. God wanted him to deliver a message to Nineveh to warn them against impending destruction if they didn’t turn from their wicked ways, if they didn’t get off the Road to Perdition.

Jonah had developed a hard heart toward the people of Nineveh, and he didn’t really care if they repented or not. In fact, Jonah had so much hatred for Nineveh that he was even angry after God spared the city.(Jonah 4:1) So rather than go to Nineveh and deliver the message of deliverance, he went to Joppa, paid the fare and boarded a ship heading for Tarshish in the opposite direction. God answered Jonah with The Perfect Storm and got him thrown overboard. Jonah went belly up, was swallowed by a big fish and spent three days and three nights in an underwater hotel called Something Fishy thinking about his wrongful decision.

There is a time and a place where we all will obey God and His Word. For some of us, it requires a good shakeup to become odedient to God and His ways. For Jonah, it required the belly of a big fish because he was God’s man to save more than 120,000 people. (Jonah 4:11) Jonah was chosen to be used by God, and God didn’t give up on him. God understands our disobedient hearts as Rebels Without a Cause, He sees what we really are, yet He gives us second chances.

God gave Jonah a second chance. God gave the sinful people of Nineveh a second chance to repent so they can Die Another Day. Jonah is much more than a Veggie Tales movie, it is a lesson of love from God our heavenly Father who specializes in second chances. If we have blown it, or if we have disappointed someone, then just repent and relax because God is the God of second chances. All we have to do is acknowledge our wrong ways and make a U turn because God will restore. God is the God of mercy, love and compassion and He will give us amazing grace when we need it, and all we have to do is come boldly to the throne of grace and ask Him.
