Got Milk?

“Then he became very thirsty, so he cried out to the LORD and said, You have given this great deliverance by the hand of Your servant and now shall I die of thirst and fall into the hands of the uncircumcised?” (Judges 15:18)

Samson was thirsty, couldn’t find any Gatorade and needed a drink. This was totally different from any trial he had before. Getting his immediate thirst quenched is nothing compared to being delivered from a thousand Philistines. But when that nasty thirst was upon him, Samson felt that to be much more troublesome than the trial that he was just delivered from by God.

It is common for God’s people, when they have been through a great deliverance, to find a little trouble too much for them. Imagine that, Samson killed a thousand Philistines, heaps upon heaps, then fainted for a few ounces of water. Jacob wrestled with God all night at Peniel, overcame the Creator Himself, got blessed, changed his name to Israel, and then limped away not so hip for he was out of joint. God performed the world’s first hip displacement surgery on Jacob and He did this to remind us of our nothingness without Him.

Samson boasted loudly when he said, “With the jawbone of a donkey I have slain a thousand men.” His boastful throat soon grew hoarse with thirst, and he devoted himself to prayer. God Almighty has many ways of humbling his people lest they become too proud. If after a great victory or deliverance you are humbled like Samson for a mere lack of water, join the club. When David ascended to the throne of Israel after many years on the lam, he said, “I am this day weak, though anointed king.” In God’s way, it is the ultimate irony that you must expect to feel weakest when you are enjoying your greatest triumph. God has many ways to drive you to drink that will leave you shaken, and stirred.

If God has delivered you in the past, your present difficulty is only like Samson’s thirst, and God will not let you faint, nor allow the uncircumcised, the wicked, the unbeliever, the stranger to the covenant or the devil to triumph over you. If He has delivered you from death, sin, poverty, cancer or divorce, surely He can deliver you from your credit cards, house note, bank levy or tax lien. The road of trials and tribulations is the road less travelled to glory and power, but don’t worry for there are wells of refreshing water of the Word of God along the way. And if water is not enough for you, God also got milk, the milk of the Word for babes. Be happy with Samson’s words, and rest assured that God will jawbone your enemies to deliver you in His time and in His way.
