Flesh and Bone

“And Adam said: ‘This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called woman [womb man] because she was taken out of man.’ Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.” (Genesis 2:23-24)

In the 1993 movie Flesh and Bone starring Dennis Quaid and James Caan about love and revenge, a woman met a man whose father murdered her family 30 years ago. That may be Hollywood’s take on flesh and bone, but in Genesis 2 we that God created the institution of marriage where Eve was created from the flesh and bone of Adam to be his wife. At the beginning of Jesus’ ministry in John 2, there was a wedding in Cana where Jesus changed water into wine. This shows that Jesus not only allowed marriage but approved and endorsed it. Jesus not only attended the wedding but enhanced it with the very best wine.

Marriage was ordained by God and approved by Jesus and therefore, it is something entirely good because it is of God. God’s purpose is to have a husband and a wife who will help each other to be fruitful and multiply. (Genesis 1:28) God called Adam’s wife a helper comparable to him. (Genesis 2:18) God does not want man to be alone, He wants man to live in a corporate way, to be married, to raise a family with children, to have mutual fellowship, and to render mutual help. God’s purpose for humanity to serve Him begins with All in the Family.

The apostle Peter said to the wives: “Wives, likewise, be submissive to your own husbands, that even if some do not obey the Word, they, without a word, may be won by the conduct of their wives, when they observe your chaste conduct accompanied by fear.” (1 Peter 3:1-2) and to the husbands: “Husbands, likewise, dwell with [your wives] with understanding, giving honor to the wife, as to the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life, that your prayers may not be hindered.” (1 Peter 3:7)

In other words, God delights to see husbands and wives serving Him together, raising children in the ways of God, and sharing in the blessings as partners and joint heirs in the grace of life. God delighted to see peace and love in the home without any Domestic Disturbance so that prayers will not be hindered because of family strife. Even if one spouse is less spiritual or does not obey the Word of God, that person can still be won over by the chaste conduct of the more spiritual one who fears God. God delights to see husbands and wives serving Him together with the family as the nearest mission field. We should not be believers alone but believers together with our spouses and others, so that we can grow, share in the grace of life, and give God the glory.
