The Good Thief

“The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.” (John 10:10)

In the 2002 movie The Good Thief, Nick Nolte is an aging gambler on a losing streak who attempts to rob a casino with his crew in the French Riviera. While Nick Nolte is a good thief, the devil is a bad thief who steals, kills and destroys. But the good news is Jesus has come so that we may have life, the God kind of life, life that exceeds all our expectations, life that is good, pure and right. To those of us who have been separated from God, the prodigals that have gone their own way like Fleetwood Mac, God has need of you, every one of you.

Like the rich man who spent all his time tending to his money, you have consumed all that you have had, and found little or no lasting pleasure. You have found fleeting joys and temporary pleasures in sex, drugs and rock n roll, but once what you had was spent, all the pleasures came to an end. To those who have reached the end of themselves and know the real value of life, God offers the kind of abundance that can never be spent or lost. God can offer life abundantly, life with never ending joy and pleasure with His presence and fellowship. You may have sought worldly friends like Jimmy Stewart or Frank Capra, but only God is a friend who can give you a Wonderful Life.

To those who have never known God, He wants you to come with your broken heart, broken body, broken dreams, and brokenness so He can heal you and give you new dreams. God will heal you and make you completely whole — body, soul, spirit, relationships and finances. You have tried to trust people, but people have always disappointed you. You have tried to help people, but they rejected you and tried to hurt you instead. God will not disappoint you for He will not reject, forsake nor hurt you. Jesus shed His precious Blood and died on the cross so that you can have the gift of life, a life that will enrich and empower you beyond your wildest dreams and Great Expectations.

To those who have been faithfully serving God, continue giving, praying, tithing, studying the Word, forgiving, witnessing, and sharing the good news of salvation with others, for this is your wellspring of joy where you will see a great harvest and bountiful blessing. The enemy has come and done much stealing, killing and destroying. For so long the devil has ruled those of us who are ignorant of God’s Word with death, sickness, poverty, oppression and destruction. Today, submit to life, the God kind of abundant life, the resurrection life, the ascended life, the overcoming life. Receive it, submit to it, walk in it, and live again as much more than conquerors. (Romans 8:37)
