Down With Love“This is My commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends.” (John 15:12-13) In the 2003 movie Down With Love, Renee Zellweger is a bestselling female advice author who has all the answers until sly journalist playboy Ewan McGregor start asking questions. While the movie pays homage to the early 1960s sex comedies of Rock Hudson and Doris Day such as Pillow Talk and Lover Come Back, we are commanded by God to be down with love. Yes, while many are down with SARS, we all should be down with love. Love one another is the most important command Jesus gave us, yet too many of us do not obey it because we find it natural to love ourselves but difficult to love others. There are believers who can quote the Bible like Samuel L Jackson in Pulp Fiction and who may even prophesy, yet they’re selfish and insensitive to the needs of friends and family. They’re so busy appearing spiritual that they don’t have time to serve people, much less love them. We may have been saved and own a Bible for many years, we may even go to church but if we have strife and selfishness in our hearts and we’re not walking in love, the blessings of God will never reach us. But the good news is we all can love because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us.(Romans 5:5) Dr Loveless may have been a villain in Wild Wild West, but when we’re loveless, the Word of God is ineffective, we can’t plead the Blood of Jesus, the Name of Jesus doesn’t apply and faith won’t work because the Bible says that faith works by love. In fact, none of the gifts of the Holy Spirit will work if we’re not down with love because 1 Corinthians 13 says so. If we want to see the incredible power of God released through us, then we need to start obeying the Word and begin loving those around us at home, at work, at the gym, at yoga class, at the airport, at the market, and everywhere. Love never fails, and love is the detonation device that will set off God’s blessing explosion. Lovelessness is the reason why we’ve seen so many failures in the world today. But we can turn those failures around and let the Word of God dwell richly within us and renew our minds. We can set our hearts on obeying the commands of Jesus and speak His Name with confidence and authority. And most of all, we can begin to love one another because God is love and we as His children must love as He loves.
