The Sixth Sense

“For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.” (Romans 8:14)

In the 1999 Bruce Willis movie The Sixth Sense, Haley Joel Osment is a boy who communicates with spirits that don’t know they’re dead seeks the help of a disheartened child psychologist. That may be Hollywood’s rendition of the sixth sense, but God has given us the sixth sense via the Holy Spirit to guide us.

There are two kinds of leading of the Holy Spirit. The first is an inner urging, as in Acts 8:29 when the Holy Spirit said to Philip, “Go near and overtake this chariot” and in Acts 10:19-20 when the Holy Spirit told Peter, “Behold, three men are seeking you. Arise therefore, go down and go with them, doubting nothing; for I have sent them.” The second kind is an inner forbidding, as mentioned in Acts 16:6-7 when the Apostle Paul on his second missionary journey with Timothy “were forbidden by the Holy Spirit to preach the word in Asia. After they had come to Mysia, they tried to go into Bithynia, but the Spirit did not permit them.” In order to know God’s will, we need to study the Word of God and be familiar with the sixth sense because the Spirit of God dwells in the innermost part of each and every one of us.

The feeling of the Spirit is not something shallow or outward for it emanates from The Core of our spiritual being. It is a voice that is not quite a voice, a feeling that is not quite a feeling. The Spirit of God shows us whether something is according to God’s will or not. We will feel right when we act according to His leading, and we will feel terrible if we disobey, delay and deviate. We must not do things that feel good or sound right if they will make us sin or take away our peace. Whenever we sense any unrest, we should realize that the Holy Spirit is displeased with what we are doing, and He is grieved.

If we do something contrary to the Word of God, we will surely have no peace, and the more we go ahead, the less peace and joy we will have. If something is from God, we will have not just peace, but also joy. Billy Crystal may want us to Analyze This and Robert DeNiro may want us to Analyze That, but we should not overanalyze, or psychoanalyze, our feelings. If we keep analyzing whether or not something is right, we will be totally confused because God’s ways are much higher than our ways, and His thoughts much higher than our thoughts. (Isaiah 55:9)
