The God Squad“And the Angel of the LORD appeared to [Gideon], and said to him, ‘The LORD is with you, you mighty man of valor!’” (Judges 6:12) The Mod Squad is one of the hippest TV shows from 1968-73 about three young outsiders who fight crime as undercover agents for the police. Like the mod squad, God always looks at us for what we will be in the God squad, not where we are now. In the book of Judges, God already had seen Gideon as a victorious leader of the God squad with A Few Good Men, not just a timid laborer who threshed wheat. Gideon was an Israelite who lived during the time of oppression by the Midianites. God had allowed Israel to be oppressed because of its rebellion and disobedience to His Word much like America and the rest of the world today. The Israelites cried out to God, and He heard their cry. The Crying Game worked because God decided to deliver them from their enemies. God chose a man with no proven military experience to lead a ragtag army against Midian. When God appeared to Gideon through a visit by the Angel of the LORD, the first words to him were, “The LORD is with you, you mighty man of valor!” The apostle Paul said, “I can do ALL things through Christ who strengthens me.” (Philippians 4:13) God has reserved an inheritance of power and glory for each of us, and He has foreordained from before the foundation of the world that we should be loaded so we can help spread or finance the gospel of salvation to the lost and accomplish great and mighty things in His name. This is not so that we will be hip like 50 Cent, act like Bruce Almighty or win the most valueable player trophy, but to experience the prosperity of a living relationship with God Almighty who wants to demonstrate His power and wisdom through each of us. God used Gideon with only 300 men to deliver Israel from a coalition army of more than 120,000. (Judges 8:10) God demonstrated His power through the one man Gideon who was willing to let Him use what little faith he had to free a nation from oppression and bring all the glory to God Himself. God delights in showing Himself strong through those who will trust Him and obey His Word. If God be for us, who can be against us?
