The Money PitNo man can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other; or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon [the system of money]. (Matthew 6:24) In the 1986 comedy The Money Pit, Tom Hanks and Shelley Long is a young couple who struggles to repair a hopelessly delapidated house which they bought for a bargain. Because of the pitfall of the money pit, God isn’t against our having money, He’s against money having us trapped in the pit. If God takes pleasure in the prosperity of His servants (Psalm 35:27), imagine how much more He desires it for His children. God is, however, against our making money a top priority and putting our trust in it instead of in Him. God is against this because He knows money is a good servant but a cruel master. The power of money is limited because it will only buy so much and it will only go so far. While there are things we can buy with a MasterCard, there are many things in life that are just priceless. If we need healing from an incurable disease like cancer, AIDS or SARS, money can buy drugs, doctors and HMOs but only God can heal us. If our family is falling apart, the wife is Unfaithful like Diane Lane and the kids are hooked on drugs, Harry Potter and The Osbournes, money won’t mend it. But if we’ll seek God first and His righteousness by obeying His Word like in Matthew 6:33, His prosperity and all the things we seek will reach into every area and every corner of our life. Eddie Murphy may run Daddy Day Care and Jim Carrey may act like God Almighty for 24 hours, but God the Father is so generous that He desires for us to have nothing but the best, just as we desire the best for our children. God’s plan is for us to have all of our needs met not according to our wants, but according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus. (Philippians 4:19) Imagine the infinite riches of His glory in heaven where the streets are made of pure gold and the foundation is made of 12 layers of precious stones! Get in on God’s plan of prosperity by keeping our priorities straight. Seek God first and His righteousness by obeying His Word so that all the things we seek will be added to us. Ford Motor Company may tell us that quality is job one, but we should make pleasing God our top priority. We need to overcome our selfishness when it comes to money and start tithing and giving offerings to God’s house, to ministries that teach and preach the uncompromised Word of God day in and day out to show God that we master money and not let money master us. Set our eyes and affection on God above all else and we’ll be delivered from the money pit, and all the things we can, and can’t get with a MasterCard, will be added to us.Copyright © 2003 Eddy Ministries.
