Shining Through

“But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord.” (2 Corinthians 3:18)

In the 1992 movie Shining Through, Michael Douglas is the American spymaster who sends his secretary Melanie Griffith to spy on a high level German officer in World War 2. Instead of shining through, man is the only creature who wear clothes to cover himself from a G-string to a three-piece suit. All other animals God created grow their own coverings such as feathers, scales, fur, armor, shell, or leathery hide but they are clothed from the inside out.

We may not realize it, but in the beginning in Genesis 1:26, we were made in the express image and likeness of God. In Ezekiel 8:2, God is clothed in bright amber fire from the waist up and from the waist down. That fire is the glory of God shining through from His innermost being. When Adam was first created, he was covered with the very same glory of God. Like The Shining, it radiated from his inner spiritual being outward to his soul and body. Adam and his wife Eve had no sense of nakedness until after they sinned and the glory of God departed from them.

It was a sad day when Adam and Eve lost that glorious covering and started wearing fig leaves, but the good news from the Word of God is that it’s not lost forever and we can get it back. When we were born again and put our faith in the Blood of Jesus, the glory of God came back and reside in us. That glory may be hidden behind some unconfessed sins right now, but it surely is there. The Bible says that as we gaze into God’s face by studying the Word of God and walk with Him, as we renew our minds to understand who we are in Christ, we’ll be changed into the image of God from glory to glory on the outside.

As we learn to hear the Spirit of God and obey the Word of God, we’ll start shining outward the glory within. Little by little, and from one level of glory to the next, we’ll be turned upside down and inside out. Instead of staring into the bathroom mirror every day, we should spend time seeking God’s face and beholding His Word. Let God dress us in the Master Designer’s latest ready-to-wear collection of His glorious presence. Once the glory of God starts shining through, anything we wear will look beautiful, in season and out of season.
