Daddy Day Care

“For the vision is yet for an appointed time; but at the end it will speak, and it will not lie. Though it tarries [delays], wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not tarry.” (Habakkuk 2:3)

In the 2003 comedy Daddy Day Care, Eddie Murphy is a laid off advertising executive who opens a day care center with a co-worker to generate income because they both couldn’t find jobs. More than a Father in heaven, God is our Daddy, He cares for us at all times and not just during the day, and He has a storehouse full of blessings that He has reserved for us. However, God’s timing for us to receive the blessings may not be the same as ours, which is now or even yesterday.

God has a specific timetable that He requires to accomplish His purposes in our lives. Sometimes that timetable seems excruciatingly interminable and painful, yet it is necessary for our spiritual growth and maturity. Janet Jackson would sing Let’s Wait a While because God takes His sweet time to develop our character before anything else so we can be loving, unselfish and giving like Him. Like Whitney Houston, God is Waiting to Exhale the blessings of prosperity on us, but only when He determines that we’re certified and ready. Joseph was put through 13 long years of slavery and imprisonment before he was promoted from the prison to the palace as the Prince of Egypt because God could not afford to have an egotistical and selfish 30-year-old managing the wealth of an empire and eventually the world as Egypt became richer and richer after the famine.

After interpreting the dream of the chief butler or cupbearer to Pharaoh that saw him reinstated to the court of Pharaoh, Joseph was forgotten by him for another two years.(Genesis 41:1) While this may seem like cruel and unusual punishment, an earlier promotion of Joseph would have disrupted God’s overall plan for Egypt. We can sometimes delay God’s timing if we refuse His correction, ignore His messengers or disobey His Word. Although it is sometimes difficult to understand, God is just, merciful, compassionate and gracious in His dealings with us as His beloved children.

When God does decide to move on our behalf, He will do it supernaturally, miraculously and abundantly. We need to cultivate our faith and patience because God will do it in His time and in His way. We will appreciate the delay and understand the reason why it was needed. “Therefore the LORD will wait, that He may be gracious to you; and therefore He will be exalted, that He may have mercy on you. For the LORD is a God of justice; blessed are all those who wait for Him.” (Isaiah 30:18)

If any of us have been waiting, and waiting, for the fulfillment of a vision or a dream that still has not materialized, be patient, trust God at His Word and ask Him for the grace to sustain us without the Beatles on The Long and Winding Road, for it will be well worth the wait.
