Wise Guys

“Happy is the man who finds wisdom, and the man who gains understanding; for her proceeds are better than the profits of silver, and her gain than fine gold.” (Proverbs 3:13-14)

In the 1986 comedy Wise Guys directed by Brian DePalma, Danny DeVito and Joe Piscopo are two errand boys for the mob who lost $250,000 and are set up to kill each other but ran off to Atlantic City. In mob parlance, a wise guy is a made member of the mafia sworn to the oath of secrecy or omerta. When facing a problem, the very first thing we should ask God for is wisdom. Not money, power, healing, legal advice, horoscopes, psychic hotlines, and definitely not the wise guys, but wisdom.

God’s wisdom is the key that will unlock all the mysteries of life. The wisdom from the Word of God will turn our every failure into success. We need to stop asking God for things we think we need and spend some time instead listening to what He has to say about our situation. God is very generous about wisdom because the Bible says, “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.” (James 1:5)

First, we need to lay out the entire problem before God, not because He doesn’t know what we’re going through, but because laying it out helps us see things from a more objective point of view. Then we need to listen for the Holy Spirit of God to advise us. Pay particular attention to what He says through the written Word. Most likely, the cares of our problems has choked the Word of God right out of our hearts (Mark 4:18-19).

If so, we need to put The Matrix away, get the Bible and begin to reload the Word into our minds so the Holy Spirit can begin to speak to us through it. As we’re listening, remain teachable, and be ready to accept rebuke and correction if necessary. We may not have seen The Importance of Being Earnest, but we need to be very honest with God, look for ways in which we’ve been wrong and confess them to Him. Those sins won’t come as any surprise to God because He already knows about them. Confession just gives us the opportunity to get rid of them.

Last but not least, we need to act on the wisdom God gives us. Let go of our own methods and put God’s modus operandi into operation. Be obedient to God, because if we don’t, that wonderful wisdom won’t do us any good at all. As we spend time with God today, set aside our own ideas and start seeking the wisdom of God. It’s the only thing that can permanently solve the problems we’ve been facing. More precious than silver and gold, the wisdom from the Word of God is truly priceless, because for everything else, there’s a MasterCard.
