Unfaithful

“No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.” (1 Corinthians 10:13)

In the 2002 Richard Gere movie Unfaithful, a New York couple’s marriage goes terribly awry when the wife Diane Lane indulges in an adulterous fling. Unlike Hollywood, God wants us to be faithful because He is faithful. If we had a relationship with someone who was faithful, we knew we could depend on that person to do what he said and his word was completely trustworthy. If he said he would call, he would. If he said he’d be somewhere at a certain time, he’d be there. In fact, if he was late, we’d begin to wonder if he had an accident or got stuck with Jackie Chan in Rush Hour because it was so contrary to his nature.

It's great to have friends who are faithful. The good news is God is faithful, He is faithful to fulfill every single promise in His Word. Sometimes we think God isn’t faithful because it appears He has not fulfilled a desire that we have. Sometimes we think God is not faithful because of a crisis, but we must remember that God is more concerned about accomplishing His purpose in our lives than giving us the desires of our hearts, and sometimes this results in hardship. The Bible is in fact loaded, and more reloaded than The Matrix, with accounts of God’s faithfulness that was often accompanied by afflictions, hardships, trials and tribulations.

God gave Abraham the son of promise Isaac after 25 years of waiting, but God was faithful to fulfill His promise and Abraham became a father at age 100. After 13 years, God finally brought Joseph out of slavery and imprisonment to be greatly used to save the world as the Prince of Egypt. After 40 years of herding sheep in the backside of the Midian desert, God appeared in the burning bush and called Moses to deliver the children of Israel from Egypt. After 40 more years of needless wandering in the desert because of their complaining and disobedience, God finally brought them into the Promised Land.

God delivered David from the lion, the bear, the Philistine giant Goliath, King Saul and many of his enemies and made him into a great king and warrior. Mark Wahlberg or Michael Caine could only do The Italian Job, but no one could have done the The Israeli Job that we find in the Bible. After 40 chapters, God restored Job with twice as much as he had before his losses. In story upon story, we learn of God’s faithfulness.

We may not be Tom Cruise, but the world needs A Few Good Men, and women, who obey the Word and are faithful to do things for God’s glory. As we spend time in the Word of God today, take inventory and ask God if we indeed have been faithful with all the time, talent, and treasure that He has graciously entrusted to us.
