Pearl Harbor

“My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing.” (James 1:2-4)

The 2001 movie Pearl Harbor starring Ben Affleck and Josh Hartnett is about two best friends and their love lives as they go off to join the second World War in the Pacific after the Japanese attack at Pearl Harbor in December 7, 1941. Whether we live near Pearl Harbor in Hawaii or not, pearls are precious because they are a product of pain and suffering.

When a grain of sand pierces the shell of an oyster, all the otherwise dormant resources within the oyster respond to the foreign irritant by caring for that sensitive spot. Over time, the sand particle is covered by healing fluids, and the wound becomes a pearl. The story about pearls is also true for us, and if we can through faith and patience turn the sands of life that irritate us into strands of pearls, we can live the abundant life that Jesus died to give us in John 10:10. From the Greek word soteria, the free gift of salvation that was purchased by the Blood of Jesus on the cross includes not just deliverance from sin, death and oppression, but also healing, protection, restoration, safety, wholeness, security and prosperity.

When hardships, afflictions, trials and tribulations invade our lives, allow the Spirit of God to shape our response. Meditate on the Word of God and learn to trust Him. Stand on the promises of the Word and speak them out loud until they became real, for The Facts of Life must conform to the truth of the Word of God. We may be sick, but the Word says in Isaiah 53:5 that by His stripes we were healed. We may be broke, but God says that He will supply all our needs according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus. (Philippians 4:19)

We may be oppressed, but Psalm 50:15 says that God will deliver us if we call on Him in the day of trouble. We may not feel blessed, but Psalm 115:12 says that God is mindful of us and will bless us. So don’t be bitter, don't sit on our pity pot and cry, and don’t rush ahead of God’s plan. Rest in the goodness of God and allow Him time to turn the irritations of life into an opportunity for our spiritual and soul growth, and watch a beautiful pearl emerge from our set of circumstances, and the world becoming our oyster.
