Nine Months

Before I formed you in the womb I knew you; before you were born I sanctified you [set apart for God’s use], I ordained you a prophet [to spread the gospel of salvation] to the nations [to the billions who are lost and unsaved who have never heard of the gospel].” (Jeremiah 1:5)

In the 1995 comedy Nine Months, Hugh Grant’s life as a single man is perfect until his girlfriend Julianne Moore gets pregnant, where he faces issues that come with being an expectant dad. When a woman becomes pregnant, she says, “I am expecting.” Each time a woman is pregnant, she couldn’t see inside her body, but she knew that she was expecting a baby. She knew by faith that God was creating something miraculous inside her, and soon she would have a baby. Whether it’s a boy or a girl, twins or triplets, that’s expectant faith.

We may not have to wait nine months like a pregnant woman, but faith for all of our needs works the same way. When we have a need, take it to God and say, “Father, this is what is broken in my life, and I believe You can fix it according to the promises in Your Word. I need Your healing touch and restoration on this situation, I believe Your Word is true and I’m expecting to receive a miracle in due time in Jesus Name. Amen.” We may not see God’s answer to our prayers right away, just like the pregnant woman couldn’t see the baby growing inside her for nine months, but God is at work and He will deliver us in His time and in His way.

The Bible in 2 Corinthians 5:7 tells us that we are to walk by faith, not by sight. We are to live by faith in God’s Word and not by what we can perceive from the five senses. Open our spiritual eyes as we spend time in the Word of God and begin to say, “In Jesus’ Name, no matter what I see, no matter what I feel, no matter what the circumstances are, no matter what’s staring me in the face, my God said, ‘The just shall live by faith,’ and by faith I’m receiving my miracle of healing, deliverance, protection, restoration, increase and prosperity according to God’s Word.” That is having expectant faith.

During the nine months a woman is pregnant, she doesn’t have a break until her water breaks. She is expecting the entire time, week after week for 40 weeks. On good days, bad days, holidays, happy days, and sad days. It doesn’t matter, for she is still expecting even on bad hair day. We need to treat our faith in the Word of God like that. We may not have seen or read Great Expectations, but we need to stay in an attitude of expectancy. Like the prophet Jeremiah, God knew us before we were born and has big plans for us, so matter what is happening, hold on to the Word of God, stand on the promises of God, and expect a miracle for it shall surely come.
