The Shape of Things

“Therefore I have uttered what I did not understand, things too wonderful for me, which I did not know.” (Job 42:3)

In the 2003 movie The Shape of Things, Rachel Weisz is an art student whose latest project is transforming her boyfriend Paul Rudd into a completely new person. If there was any one man on earth who had reason to question the shape of things, especially God’s love, it was Job. He lost his family, his health, and his vast wealth all at the same time. He went from hero to zero, and he was Gone in 60 Seconds. His three friends came not to help him, but to rain on his spiritual parade, and even his wife told him to curse God and die. (Job 2:9)

God had already addressed his integrity, for Job was described as blameless and upright, fearing God and shunning Dr Evil. (Job 1:1) His afflictions were not born from sin but from the removal of God’s hedge of protection to test him. Job acknowledged God’s right to do anything until he could take it no longer. Job questioned God, God answered, but not in the way he wanted to hear. Hollywood could only produce The Italian Job, but God answered Job with a series of questions in the Book of Job that represents the most incredible discourse of correction by God to any human being.

Forty chapters later, Job realized that he had questioned the motives of Elohim, the Creator of the universe. Job fell flat before God Almighty and realized his total depravity before the Author of love. “Therefore I have uttered what I did not understand, things too wonderful for me, which I did not know.” Like Job, many of us have questioned God’s activity in our lives, and some of us even doubted His love and faithfulness based on the temporary circumstances that came our way.

The cross and the precious Blood of Jesus that was poured out for our salvation answers the love question. God sent His very own Son, His only Son Jesus, to die for all of our sins, past present and future. God’s ways are much higher than our ways (Isaiah 55:8-9) and cannot always be understood with our simple minds. That will be for a future time when all is said and done, when all will be understood. Since our money says In God We Trust and Job was restored with twice the assets that he had before (Job 42:10), we can learn to trust God completely, embrace Him in the bad times as well as the good, for the shape of things will only turn out for the better.
