Risky Business

“For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.” ( Romans 8:5-6)

In the 1983 movie Risky Business, Tom Cruise is a Chicago teenager looking for fun while his parents are away, but ended up in a risky business to make some fast bucks with Rebecca De Mornay the callgirl after he lost his dad’s Porsche. While the movie launched Tom Cruise’s acting career, spiritual inactivity or laziness is risky business for us.

When spiritual laziness continues over the course of weeks, months, and years the result is atrophy of our spiritual life. It is then hard for us to even think in terms of spiritual things and if we allow our hearts and minds to dwell on fleshly or worldly things to the exclusion of the spiritual the result will be death. Like working out regularly is needed to stay in good physical shape so that our muscles don’t atrophy, spiritual well being requires continual maintenance.

“Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.” (Matthew 4:4) Our spiritual food from the Word of God is needed to feed our spirits daily just like food provide physical nourishment for our bodies. Our daily focus must FIRST be on the kingdom of God and His righteousness (Matthew 6:33) before we get to do our things, and as we seek God first, all the things that we seek will be added to us.

God does not want us to be spiritually lazy or slothful. The Bible says that “he who is slothful in his work is a brother to him who is a great destroyer” (Proverbs 18:9) and “laziness casts one into a deep sleep, and an idle person will suffer hunger.” (Proverbs 19:15) To skip a day of spiritually walking with God, that is, spending time in the Word, Bible study, prayer and meditation, is to have a day of spiritual atrophy. It is a dangerous thing, for it only take a few days before our focus will change from being set on what the spirit desires to what our wicked sinful nature desires.

Once we cross the point of having our focus taken off of the spiritual and placed on the physical it will take a long time to return. It will probably take much longer than we had planned and we may not ever regain the enthusiasm for God that we once had. Before you decide you’re just going to skip praying, skip thanking God for His blessings in your life, skip praising Him, skip reading the Word of God, skip having that quiet time with God today, just think of how great the cost is from changing the direction of your life from life and peace to that of sin and death. Even if you are Tom Cruise, that is still indeed risky business.
