Big Fat Liar

“He [the devil] was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it.” (John 8:44)

In the 2002 movie Big Fat Liar, Frankie Muniz is a young boy and liar who battles shady Hollywood producer and fellow liar Paul Giamatti for credit to a film he wrote. Like the movie, there’s a big fat liar at work in the world 2 Fast 2 Furious and his name is satan or the devil. The devil is a consummate deceiver who’s been doing the same thing he’s been doing ever since the Garden of Eden, tricking us with the weapons of mass deception into believing the Bible is just a book, that God’s Word isn’t true, that it’s cool to indulge in sin, that there is no hell, that we can do whatever we want that feels good, and God does not even exist.

Some believers just can’t believe God’s promises because they’ve seen so many things in the natural that appear to contradict them. They’ve seen tithers go broke, givers in debt, families in lack, marriages on the rocks, children oppressed, and sick folks not getting healed. But the truth is they only think they’ve seen those temporal things for The Facts of Life must conform to the finality and absolute truth of the Word of God.

After six thousand years, the devil is a grandmaster at deception, always trying to make things look as though God’s Word is not going to work, when he makes it looks like all hope is lost and none of God’s promises are true. The devil may have used Hollywood to portray God in the movies with Morgan Freeman in Bruce Almighty and George Burns in Oh God!, but God in all His glory and majesty cannot be mocked.

When we encounter situations that don’t line up with the Word of God we need to say, “In the Name of Jesus I don’t care about appearances. I believe the Word of God is final and true and I refuse to doubt it for God will make it true in His time.” That’s exactly the way we need to be where the Word of God is concerned.

As we meditate on the Word daily, we need to learn to trust the Word and rely on it to such an extent that when the devil shows us something in the natural that appears to contradict it, we just say, “I will not be gullible enough to believe it. I will stick with the Word of God no matter how painful my circumstances are, for God will deliver me.” If we’ll do that, the big fat liar and father of lies may still win an Oscar every year for Best Original Lie, but he will never be able to put one over us.
