Driven

“When you have crossed the Jordan into the land of Canaan, then you shall drive out all the inhabitants of the land from before you, destroy all their engraved stones, destroy all their molded images, and demolish all their high places; you shall dispossess the inhabitants of the land and dwell in it, for I have given you the land to possess.” (Numbers 33:51-53)

In the 2001 movie Driven, Sylvester Stallone is a former auto racing champion who gives guidance to a young hotshot driver who is coming apart at the seams in the middle of championship season. Like the movie, we need to be driven to drive out the squatters and take possession of our land. God has given us a Promised Land, a place flowing with milk and honey, where our every need can be met, and then some. A place where we can keep sin underfoot as we rule and reign with Christ. A place where according to Isaiah 54:17, no weapon formed against us will prosper. A place where we are seated with Christ in heavenly places, far above principalities and powers, far from poverty, sickness, death, defeat and oppression of this world.

As we study the Word of God, we won’t Find Nemo, but we’ll find that’s an accurate description of the kind of victory we should be experiencing not in the sweet by-and-by in heaven somewhere, but in the here and now. After Adam sinned in the Garden of Eden and forfeited his dominion on earth, the devil is still here, and he’s not just going to pack up and go home just because God has promised us victory.

Ae we discover our inheritance of glory as heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ in Romans 8:17, we have to drive the devil out, and the good news is God has given us the power to do it because Jesus said, “Behold, I give to you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you” (Luke 10:19). Furthermore, the devil is unarmed and defenseless because Colossians 2:15 says, “[Jesus] disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them [in a parade of victory where the vanquished is stripped naked and bound in chains], triumphing over them in [the cross].”

We have absolutely no reason to fear the devil because Jesus defeated and disarmed him through His death, burial and resurrection. The devil can’t defeat us unless we by our own ignorance of the Word of God let him. All he can do is make empty threats, but empty threats can stop us cold if we believe them. So study the Word daily and learn to believe the Word of God instead. Use the Word and the Name of Jesus to wash the devil right out of our hair, drive him out and cross the finish line to victory.
