Irreconcilable Differences

“Now all things are of God, who has reconciled us to Himself through Jesus Christ, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation, that is, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not imputing their trespasses to them, and has committed to us the word of reconciliation.” (2 Corinthians 5:18-19)

In the 1984 movie Irreconcilable Differences, Ryan O’Neal and Shelley Long is a bickering Hollywood couple sued for divorce by their nine-year-old daughter Drew Barrymore who just couldn’t take it anymore. Unlike the movie or the most commonly stated ground for divorce, God has no irreconcilable differences with us. Sadly, very few unsaved people have ever really heard that good news because too many of us are busy telling the world God is mad at them, that they’re sinful and wrong.

The good news that God has commissioned us to share with the world as we proclaim the gospel of salvation is that He has given us the word of reconciliation. God has given us the ministry of reconcilation, He has sent us to tell the news that God has restored harmony and fellowship between Himself and ALL men after the fall of Adam. Not just believers, not just the people who own a Bible or who are reading this email, but everyone.

Even the worst reprobate sinner in the world, the worst child molester, the worst dictator, the worst mass killer, the worst pornographer, and the worst infidel we can think of is every bit as reconciled to God as we are for Romans 5:10 says that “when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God through the death of his Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life.”

The Apostle Paul used the word reconciled in past tense because God has already restored fellowship between Himself and the world. That’s right, there are no more irreconcilable differences between us and God. God did it when there was not one person on earth except His only Son Jesus who believed in the new birth, and God did it when the entire world was lying in sin because of what Adam did in the Garden of Eden.

Through the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus on the third day, God has cleansed, forgiven and restored to Himself every man, woman and child on earth. Romans 5:8 says “but God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” All we have to do now is believe in our hearts, confess Jesus is Lord and Savior according to Romans 10:9-10, and by faith receive that good news.

That’s the good word God has given us, and that’s the very same word we need to share with the billions out there who are lost or backslidden so they can be reconciled back to God as His dear children. If we’ll do it as we obey the Great Commission of Mark 16:15, not only will they won’t stay lost very long, but they will also become heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ (Romans 8:17) to an inheritance of glory that was ordained from before the foundation of the world.
