Gone With the Wind

“And when Peter had come down out of the boat, he walked on the water to go to Jesus. But when he saw that the wind was bositerous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink he cried out, saying, ‘Lord, save me!’” (Matthew 14:29-30)

In the 1939 classic movie Gone With the Wind based on the Margaret Mitchell novel, Vivien Leigh and Clark Gable starred in an epic story of a woman named Scarlett O’Hara who can cope with anything in the American Civil War of 1861-65 except losing the love of the man she wanted to another. While the movie won 8 Oscars, God has a much better version in the Book of Matthew chapter 14 where Jesus invited Peter to come to Him on the water.

Peter was walking on the water but when he saw that the wind was boisterous, he was afraid and began to sink. What enabled Peter to walk on the water in the first place was none other than his faith in the Word of Jesus. Peter began to sink because he saw A Mighty Wind and was afraid. It wasn’t the wind that defeated him, it was his fear of it.

Peter looked at his circumstances, gave in to fear, was defeated, and gone with the wind. If Peter had kept his eyes on Jesus, his faith would never have wavered. All the blustering and blowing in the world, giant waves and even The Perfect Storm of George Clooney couldn't have drawn him off course because God has not given him the spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind. (2 Timothy 1:7)

Faith is developed by daily meditating on and believing the Word of God. Fear is developed by meditating on and actually believing the devil’s lies, lies and more lies. Fearful meditation is also known as worrying, it doesn’t make us happy, so don’t do it. The Word of God is the sword of the Spirit (Ephesians 6:17), and we need to use it to fight the devil in the arena of life.

As a Gladiator, hold up our shield of faith and quench all of his fiery darts. Speak words of faith based on the Word of God and fear will have no choice but to depart. Fear isn’t just a reaction to circumstances, it’s a spiritual force that begins on the inside of us and it’s absolutely, totally destructive. In fact, fear is the devil’s Lethal Weapon, and he moves in response to fear in the exact same way that God moves in response to faith.

The devil challenges the promises of God with fear and all the what ifs, but if we are well-versed and well-grounded in the Word of God, The Sum of All Fears is a big fat zero. No matter what we see on the news, we could be perfectly at peace from the storms of life as we rest on the goodness of God. Reese Witherspoon may be Legally Blonde, but we are Legally Blessed. With the Bible as our Loaded Weapon that is more Reloaded than The Matrix, we can then be cavalier like Rhett Butler because frankly fear my dear, we don’t give a damn.
