Happy Days

“Do not sorrow, for the joy of the LORD is your strength.” (Nehemiah 8:10)

Happy Days is the popular 1974-1984 TV show about the Cunningham family living through the fabulous 1950s with the help of that lovable greaser Fonzie. But the truth is we don’t need Richie, Potsie or Fonzie to have happy days as long as we walk in faith, and in love, and in joy. We are to walk by and obey the Word of God where His Word is the absolute final authority and we’d confess it no matter what the circumstances look like. For example, we may be sick, but Isaiah 53:5 says that by His stripes we are healed. We also must decide that no matter what happens, whether we feel like it or not, we’d walk in love because the Bible clearly says that faith works by love, as it won’t work any other way. These two decisions to operate by faith in the Word of God and to walk in love are the two most important decisions we will ever make in life. But we won’t be enjoying happy days if we are leaving out the powerful force of joy. We have no right to walk by faith and walk in love and just leave joy dormant in our spirit because it is too important and vital as a spiritual force.

We must realize that joy is an essential part of a life of victory and prosperity. Without it, we might have an occasional triumph now and then, but we won’t be able to sustain them, for they’d quickly be slip sliding away. Happiness is fleeting and is based on feelings and emotions of the moment, but joy is what gives us the strength to hold steady at Full Throttle like Charlie’s Angels when the circumstances of life get rough and we have to endure sickness, poverty, oppression, lack, failure, and defeat. Joy gives us the ability to laugh in the devil’s face when he starts trying to attack our faith with his fiery darts. Joy gives us a kind of staying power that will make us winners time and again as we get loaded, and reloaded, with it.

Today make a commitment to God that we’re going to walk, not just only in faith as we obey His Word and walk in love as we love others like ourselves, but also walk in joy as well. The devil may wear Prada, but if he can’t steal our joy, he can’t keep our goods. Rejoice or re-joy in the Lord always (Philippians 4:4), in season and out of season, and there won’t be anything the devil can do or say to steal our victory and happy days from us.
