Ben HurThen the LORD said to Moses, saying: See, I have called by name Bezalel the son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah. And I have filled him with the Spirit of God, in wisdom, in understanding, in knowledge, and in all manner of workmanship, to design artistic works, to work in gold, in silver, in bronze, in cutting jewels for setting, in carving wood, and to work in all manner of workmanship. (Exodus 31:1-5) Ben Hur is a 1959 classic starring Charlton Heston as Judah Ben Hur, a Jewish prince who is betrayed and sent to slavery by a Roman friend but who managed to regain his freedom and seek revenge. Ben Hur in Hebrew means the son of Hur, and the Bible has a true story about Bezalel Ben Uri Ben Hur in the Book of Exodus. He was called by God not to race in a chariot, but to help build the tabernacle with all furniture and utensils therein so the children of Israel could have a place to worship. This tabernacle was the forerunner of Solomons temple. Bezalel may have believed that he was skilled to carve wood, cut jewels, and create fine works of art with gold, silver, and bronze. He probably did not associate it with God's work, but the Bible tells us that God called him and filled him with the Spirit of God, wisdom, understanding and knowledge to enable him to do great and wonderful things for His glory. The Babylonians destroyed the first temple in 587 BC and the Romans destroyed the second temple in 70 AD, but the Apostle Paul told us that we are now the temple of the living God. (2 Corinthians 6:16) Today, God still calls people into their professions to fulfill His purpose, to facilitate or finance the preaching of the gospel to lost souls in the world so God's temple can be built as the Spirit of God moves into each new believer. This is evidenced by the many occupations that exist today. The balance of interest among each person throughout the world happen not by chance and it is certainly not by chance that we have only so many doctors, so many lawyers, so many singers, so many artists, and so many preachers. The truth is, our interest in our profession is not born of our own choosing because before we were born, God already knew us and what were going to be. (Jeremiah 1:5) In fact, we can have a deep desire to walk with God without having to go to seminary or pursue full time ministry. We can serve God where we are placed, because to remove us from the marketplace where the greatest harvest of souls is yet to occur would be to remove us from where God has called us. We may not be Ben Hur, but we can serve God wherever He has gifted us and called us, whether in school, at work, in business, at home, at the airport, on vacation, or even at the gym.Copyright © 2003 Eddy Ministries.
