Like A Prayer

Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints.” (Ephesians 6:18)

Like A Prayer is the long awaited Madonna album in 1989 that came with a substantial dose of critical acclaim. While we Live To Tell, we will learn that praying isn’t just a way to comfort ourselves, nor is it a way to earn God’s favor. When we pray, we’re making better Contact than Jodie Foster with the living God of the universe and are adding to our Immaculate Collection.

Prayer is so powerful that it can have a more Deep Impact than any meteor or anything else we say or do. We may not be Like a Virgin or a Material Girl like Madonna, but we can stop saying Papa Don’t Preach and pray boldly, inviting God to transform our relationship with Him through prayer. Pray in private, and when we do pray in public, don’t make a big show of it to be sure that our motive is to communicate with God and not to impress others.

Ask God to fill us with His Holy Spirit, because once we have a relationship with Jesus Christ, we can ask the Spirit to move in and Erotica to move out. Relying on the Holy Spirit’s power will help us hear and respond to God’s voice. Madonna could only live the American Life and sing Express Yourself, but the Holy Spirit will also help to express our deepest prayers to God when we don’t know what to say.

Believe in God’s promises from the Bible and have faith not in Truth or Dare, but in His willingness and power to answer our prayers. Be persistent when we pray, and remember the power that was unleashed when the early Church prayed, and look for God to answer faithful prayers in powerful ways. Approach prayer like a Holiday to La Isla Bonita, not an obligation that have us stranded at Borderline.

Prayer should never be boring, so be open to hearing from God, and don’t be afraid to have a Close Encounter of the God Kind. Pursue God with a passion and a desire to be transformed as we Justify My Love. Read the Bible daily and meditate on what it says, apply it to our lives, and speak the Word to affirm and claim God’s promises.

Pray against Dr Evil, Mini Me, and other wicked spiritual forces that may be working against us such as poverty, strife, division, sickness and oppression, because prayer is The Terminator that will beef us up like The Hulk to stop evil in its tracks. When facing a decision, ask God to show us the direction in which He’s moving, then commit to following Him like Charlie’s Angels at Full Throttle.

Confess any sins that are hindering our relationship with God, and ask for God’s grace to help us live a pure life so that we don’t Legally bomb. Put trust in God rather than ourselves, other people, things, or circumstances. Pray for people who don’t yet have relationships with Christ, standing in the spiritual gap for them to ask God to work in their lives.

Be humble, and remember that it was Jesus’ work on the cross that is the ultimate source of power for our prayers. Don’t let our prayers become just laundry lists of requests. Praise God for who He is, confess our sins, and thank God for His blessings as well as asking Him for what we need and want.

Don’t be 2 Fast 2 Furious, but fast when God leads us, because fasting can help us focus more on our spiritual appetite than our physical one. Be willing to make sacrifices for God, as He may ask us to give up social time with other people or stop shacking up so we can spend quality time alone with Him. Know that God will always hear and answer our prayers, so wait patiently for God to act in His way and in His time.
