Full Throttle

“After the death of Moses the servant of the LORD, it came to pass that the LORD spoke to Joshua the son of Nun, Moses’ assistant, saying: ‘Moses My servant is dead. Now therefore, arise, go over this Jordan, you and all this people, to the land which I am giving to them — the children of Israel.’” (Joshua 1:1-2)

In the Charlie’s Angels sequel Full Throttle, Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore and Lucy Liu investigate a series of murders that occur after the theft of a witness protection database and go after fallen angel Demi Moore as the prime suspect.

In the Bible, before we are allowed to go full throttle, we have to go through Training Day without Denzel Washington and finish prep school. Joshua was known for 40 years in the desert as the assistant of Moses. God’s training for him required years of dedicated service, obedience, desert living, spy games, and tests of faith. Moses sent 12 spies to check out the Promised Land, but only Joshua and Caleb came back with the Minority Report that the land could be taken at once.

Long before James Bond, Joshua was in God’s eyes The Spy Who Loved Me because of his faith. The preparation years were designed to elevate Joshua into each new stage of his development and his ultimate calling to lead the children of Israel into and occupy the Promised Land. Like Joshua, God wants each of us to go through certain experiences and grow before our cups run over like in Psalm 23:5.

While some of those times may appear to be depressing, laborious, painful and meaningless, they are exactly what God is using to mold our character and transform us from glory to glory for the ultimate mission He plans to accomplish through us. Without these experiences, the Jordan River can never be crossed and we cannot enter the Promised Land. Before we go at full throttle like Charlie’s Angels, we need to learn to embrace the painful as well as the quiet times from God because they, too, are a booster to the next stage of our spiritual walk.
We must not make the mistake of being 2 Fast 2 Furious in doing things our way, because we are not at Burger King. God’s ways are far higher than our ways, and His thoughts are much higher than our thoughts. (Isaiah 55:8-9)

The Bible tells us, “being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ.” (Philippians 1:6) When the time is right, God will move suddenly and the rewards will be above and beyond what we can ask or think.
