Excess Baggage

“Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. Make me hear joy and gladness, that the bones You have broken may rejoice. Hide Your face from my sins, and blot out all my iniquities.” (Psalm 51:7-9)

In the 1997 movie Excess Baggage, Alicia Silverstone is a rich spoiled brat who fakes her own kidnapping by locking herself in her the trunk of her BMW, and then the car gets stolen by car thief Benicio del Toro and she ended up liking him. If any of us are carrying around a burden of guilt that is weighing us down, the good news is God doesn’t want us to carry that excess baggage or feel guilty about it any longer.

We don’t have to accept that reservation for a guilt trip made by us or someone else. God wants us to be free because His Word says so. God loves us so much that He even sent His Son Jesus to die on the cross and shed His precious blood to wash away all of our sins. Instead of pleading guilty, we can just plead the blood, the blood of Jesus over our possessions, family, business, health, and circumstances.

It is difficult to get anywhere in life if we’re dragging a load of guilt wherever we go like a ball and chain. But God has a way for us to be free from that condemnation, and King David found a way to be free from his sins with Bathsheba. In Psalm 51:2, he prayed to God in his famous Psalm 51 of repentance, “Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin.”

There is a cleansing from guilt through genuine repentance. We don’t have to tell anyone else what happened or make a public announcement, as long as we say goodbye to Tom Hanks and make a complete U turn from the Road to Perdition. It can be just between us and God. We can say, “Lord, I’m still carrying this guilt over what has happened and I want to wash it right out of my hair. Father, I confess my sins and ask You to forgive me in Jesus Name.” Confess it, believe it and God will clean us up, help us leave all that excess baggage behind, and restore to us the joy of His salvation. (Psalm 51:12)
