The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen

“Then the Angel of the LORD put out the end of the staff that was in His hand, and touched the meat and the unleavened bread; and fire rose out of the rock and consumed the meat and the unleavened bread. And the Angel of the LORD departed out of his [Gideon’s] sight.” (Judges 6:21)

In the 2003 Sean Connery movie The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen or LXG, Allan Quatermain, Captain Nemo, the Invisible Man, Dr Jekyll, Tom Sawyer and other Victorian heroes team up on a secret mission. While these men were considered extraordinary, in God’s eyes we are just ordinary unless we respond to His call for service. Practically every Biblical leader has been called by God while performing his profession.

Moses was herding sheep for his father-in-law Jethro when he saw God in the burning bush, Amos was a sheepbreeder and tender of sycamore fruit when he was called to prophesy, Peter was a fisherman Finding Nemo, Matthew was a dreaded tax collector with more shakedowns than The Sopranos, Luke was a doctor without an HMO, Jesus was a carpenter doing Home Improvement, and the Apostle Paul or the former Saul of Tarsus was a tentmaker. When God called Gideon to free Israel from the oppression of the Amalekites, Gideon was threshing wheat in a winepress.

Gideon argued with God like Moses, saying that his clan was the least in Manasseh and he was the least in his father’s house but he acknowledged God by preparing an offering to Him. The Angel took the tip of his staff and touched the goat meat and the bread. Fire emerged from the rock, consuming the meat and the bread. As with Moses, God chose to do a miracle with the staff, the symbol of Gideon’s profession. God did this because God wants us to know that the tools He has given each of us are the tools He wants to use to demonstrate His power. But for that to happen, we must yield our talents, contacts, knowhow and entire toolbox to Him for miracles to be manifested.

God wants each of us to have an overriding ministry objective to our professional life. God doesn’t want us to leave our work to join Him, He wants us to work for Him, reach out to people, and help spread the gospel of salvation through our line of work. The difference between extraordinary and ordinary is just that little extra. Madonna and Geena Davis may be in A League of Their Own, Tom Berenger and Charlie Sheen may be in Major League, but we can be in a league even better than LXG if we yield our time, talents and treasure to God every day.
