How To Deal

“So the women sang as they danced, and said: ‘Saul has slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands.’ Then Saul was very angry, and the saying displeased him; and he said, ‘They have ascribed to David ten thousands, and to me they have ascribed only thousands. Now what more can he have but the kingdom?’ ” (1 Samuel 18:7-8)

In the 2003 teen movie How To Deal, Mandy Moore is a teenager disllusioned by too much of love gone wrong who refuses to believe that true love exists, and then has to deal with a sexy new guy who comes along. In the Bible, God gave us a lesson of how to deal with the success of others through the mistake of Saul, who was the first King of Israel. David was in Saul’s army and he was beginning to build a reputation as a powerful warrior.

One day when David came back from victory over the Philistines, the women danced and sang: ‘Saul has slain his thousands, and David his tens thousands.’ (1 Samuel 18:7). Saul did not know how to deal with the popularity of David, and he was very angry. David’s praises galled him. “They have ascribed or credited David with tens of thousands,” he thought, “but me with only thousands. Now what more can he have but the kingdom?” (1 Samuel 18:8) Saul began to snap and from then on, he was never the leader God intended for him to be. Long before Social Security, Saul invented social insecurity. Saul allowed insecurity to drive his every decision, and insecurity leads to the need to control people and circumstances.

The need to control leads to anger once we realize we are unable to control anything or anyone. Saul could not accept, much less rejoice, over David’s success, and he wouldn’t enroll with Adam Sandler in Anger Management. David’s life would never be the same, because Saul sought to kill David at every turn. Saul could have seen David as a brilliant general and a part of his A Team to make Israel mightier and richer. Instead, Saul saw David as a threat to his throne and chased after him long before Harrison Ford was The Fugitive.

“Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep.” (Romans 12:15) When we hear good news about others, we are commanded by God in His Word to rejoice with them. If we compare notes with others and don’t feel we measure up, we must recognize that this is one of the devil’s greatest hits to destroy us. God has given us all things to enjoy and His yoke-destroying, burden removing anointing, He has a unique plan for each of us, and He alone is our provision and security. We need to trust in the purposes He has for us and remember what the Apostle Paul wrote, “And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:19)
