Extreme Makeover

“And Ananias went his way and entered the house; and laying his hands on him, he said, ‘Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus, who appeared to you on the road as you came, has sent me that you may receive your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit.’ ”(Acts 9:17)

In the new 2003 reality TV show Extreme Makeover, three people are chosen to receive the makeover of a lifetime which includes plastic surgery, lasik eye surgery, cosmetic dentistry, hair, makeup, and fitness. Unlike the TV show, there is a place of extreme makeover and obedience for all of us. For the Apostle Paul, it was being struck legally blind on the road to Damascus. God knocked Saul of Tarsus off his high horse with a blinding light. A voice from heaven asked Saul why he was persecuting Jesus because Saul was persecuting the church.

When Saul arose, he could not see. Jesus told him to go to Damascus and meet a man named Ananias. There, Jesus restored Saul’s sight through Ananias and later on he was known as Paul. Some of us require only gentle pressure to lead us toward God. For others of us, a Smith and Wesson, a lawsuit or a subpoena is necessary to get our undivided attention. There are many in the world today who are not James Dean but who are Rebels Without a Cause against God and His Word. Yet God’s love for these folks is so great that He takes extreme measures to gain their attention, and their hearts.

If we run into people like this and we will, do not fear their arrogance but see them as God sees them, as people who need an extreme makeover, people who need Jesus as Lord and Savior and who could be a powerful force in the Kingdom if God saved them. We should reach out with the love of God and begin praying for them. God has called many nut cases into His Kingdom through miraculous circumstances in order to save their lives from the pit of hell and transform them into His children and heirs. Despite the rough and tough exterior, these are needy people who are crying out for help in their own prideful way.

Whenever God begins this process in the life of a sinner, He has others ready to assist. Ananias was the chosen person in Paul’s life, and he found it unbelievable that Paul could have been saved and had to be Touched by an Angel. Perhaps God has placed such a person in your life, or perhaps God desires to use you to be an Ananias in the life of someone. To do so requires a willingness to come to the one who needs your help, and we need to be humble and obedient because that person could be the next Apostle Paul, or the next Eddy.
