Sister Act

And when the cloud departed from above the tabernacle, suddenly Miriam became leprous, as white as snow. Then Aaron turned toward Miriam, and there she was, a leper.” (Numbers 12:10)

In the 1992 Whoopi Goldberg comedy Sister Act, a worldly singer who witnessed a mob crime is hidden by the police in a convent, where she has trouble fitting in. God, however, wrote the first real sister act about the sin and forgiveness of Moses’ sister Miriam. When Miriam and Aaron spoke against their brother Moses for marrying an Ethopian woman, the anger of God was aroused against them. (Numbers 12: 9)

God rebuked Miriam and Aaron, and when He departed, suddenly Miriam became leprous, as white as snow. Frightened, Aaron turned to Moses and admitted he was wrong, “Oh, my lord! Please do not lay this sin on us, in which we have done foolishly and in which we have sinned. Please do not let her be as one dead, whose flesh is half consumed when he comes out of his mother's womb!” (Numbers 12:11-12).

Miriam, however, did not admit that she was wrong for criticizing Moses the man of God, nor did she asked for healing. Moses could have said to his sister, “Thou shall not criticize a man of God. It's none of your business who I marry, you deserve to be a leper for talking about me and my wife that way.” But he didn’t.

Moses cried out to God on behalf of his sister, saying, “Please heal her, O God, I pray!” (Numbers 12:13) God decreed that Miriam be shut out of the camp for seven days before He restored her to health. In this Biblical sister act, both of Miriam brothers Aaron and Moses interceded for her healing and forgiveness. Numbers 12 not only reminds us to guard our tongues carefully, it also demonstrates how we should respond when other people speak evil against us.

It takes a big, mature, transcendent and spiritual person to stand in the face of an enemy after being defamed, gossiped, criticized, slandered, maligned, lied about, or wronged, and say, “God, please forgive that person, I bind the spirits of strife and division and I claim his or her deliverance from the spirit of sin and blindness in the Name of Jesus.” It’s not easy, but through Christ we can do it when we ask for His help, especially when we are too hurt or angry to do so with our own flesh. When someone has hurt us, release them, give them to God and ask Him to bless them and show them His salvation. As we do that, they will see the love of God in action and God will begin to legally bless us.
