The Curse of The Black Pearl

“Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us (for it is written, ‘Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree’) (Deut. 21:23), that the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles in Christ Jesus, that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.” (Galatians 3:13-14)

In the 2003 movie Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of The Black Pearl, Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom try to stop the Black Pearl, a ship of pirates whose captain intends to break an ancient curse with the blood of a beautiful young woman. The pirate ship Black Pearl may have been cursed with more ghosts than Ghostbusters can handle, but in reality the whole world was and still is under a curse. Satan came to Eve, Adam’s wife, in the form of a serpent and deceived her into disobeying God, and Adam followed suit.

Satan didn’t have any power at all, he had to sneak his way in, not even talking to Adam directly but talking to his wife. Adam should have kicked him out of the Garden of Eden right there and then. But Adam disobeyed the command God had given him and did what the devil told him to do instead, and when he did that, he made Satan his lord. In bowing to Satan, Adam gave the devil the authority and dominion that God had given man, and made him the illegitimate ruler of the earth. Through one man Adam sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned. (Romans 5:12) The earth and everything in it was suddenly cursed. (Genesis 3:17-19)

But the good news is God has delivered us from the curse of not just the Black Pearl but from all curses. God sent His only Son Jesus to die on the cross and shed His precious blood for us, and through Jesus, He set us free from the curse of poverty, sickness, oppression, addiction or whatever is bedeviling us. (Galatians 3:13) The moment we made Jesus Christ the Lord and Saviour of our life, we were delivered from the lordship of Satan. We were not just redeemed from all the terrible curses of Deuteronomy 28, but we also receive the blessing of Abraham and the promise of the Holy Spirit through faith.

The curse is still out there, and we can see it all around us, but we now have a choice. We have authority over it in the Name of Jesus, so we can stand against it. Instead of offering human or animal sacrifices to break the curse, we can just plead the Blood of Jesus on our bodies, souls, families, businesses, relationships, finances, possessions, and all that we have and stand on the Word of God. God is love and He has done everything that love can do. God sent Jesus from heaven down to earth to live and die as a man on the cross to redeem us from the curse, and to give us the blessing that He initially gave only to Abraham and his children.
