The
Core
“Delight
yourself also in the LORD, and He shall give you the desires of your
heart.” (Psalm 37:4)
In the 2003 movie The Core, Hilary Swank and Aaron Eckhart lead a team
of scientists on a crash project to send a ship and bomb to the earth’s
core to prevent it from not spinning. The core is the very heart and
center of something, and the heart that David wrote about in Psalm 37:4
is more than just a blood-pumping muscle in our chest. The heart is
the spiritual epicenter and the very core of our being. It is a part
of us that is beyond human understanding that desires to commune with
God.
What God is saying
is when we take pleasure in serving Him, in studying and obeying His
Word, in praising and worshiping Him, and in loving and giving to others
on His behalf He can give us the desires of our heart. God not only
wants to do it and takes pleasure in our prosperity (Psalm 35:27), but
we have His Word on it. To those of us who have limited possessions,
that sounds impossible. But to God, who Himself is the unlimited source
of supply and the Creator of heaven and earth, it is a walk in the park.
It is easy for God to give us the desires of our heart because He owns
all the gold and silver (Haggai 2:8) and in fact, He owns it all. (Psalm
24:1) The human heart desires total fulfillment, and it desires total
fulfillment because it is a part of God, and He is the total source
of life itself. We may chase pleasure, power, profit, possessions, or
prestige, but no one thing can satisfy the longing of the human heart.
We may rack up thousands of miles on the MasterCard, but there are something
in life that it just can’t buy.
It takes the combined
fivefold blessings of God — spiritual, physical, emotional, relational,
and financial — to do the job. And it is only through a personal
relationship with Jesus Christ that our heart can be truly fulfilled.
Some of us may say, “It’s impossible to be truly fulfilled.”
But it is not Mission Impossible, because God loves us so much that He
sent His only Son Jesus to die for us to give us the free gift of salvation.
And God further says in His Word that we can have our heart’s desires
fulfilled and be Touched by an Angel when we delight ourselves Full Throttle
in Him.
