Cocoon

“And Moses said to the people, ‘Do not be afraid. Stand still, and see the salvation of the LORD, which He will accomplish for you today. For the Egyptians whom you see today, you shall see again no more forever. The LORD will fight for you, and you shall hold your peace.’ ” (Exodus 14:13-14)

In the 1985 Ron Howard movie Cocoon, a group of trespassing seniors swim in a pool containing alien cocoons and found themselves energized with youthful vigor. While the movie is about alien cocoons, the butterfly variety holds a deep lesson for all of us. The caterpillar that lies inside the cocoon will never become the beautiful Madame Butterfly if we open the cocoon prematurely because it is the struggle to exit the cocoon itself that strengthens the wings and allows the butterfly to emerge as a strong, new creature of nature.

God understands how necessary this is, and that’s why we are allowed to experience painful, disruptive, and often life-changing events. God even sets them up like He did when He hardened Pharaoh's heart to chase after the Israelites. (Exodus 14:4) What the children of Israel thought was Cruel Intentions when Pharaoh sent all the chariots of Egypt to pursue them after they had been freed and cornered against the Red Sea became the stage for the most incredible miracle of all time, the parting of the Red Sea.

Many of us have heard this powerful story of deliverance and should not be surprised if God put us against the Red Seas and then even send in the Egyptians in order to show His power in and through us. The truth of the matter is, if we do not know God can deliver us from the Red Sea experiences Against All Odds, then we can never learn to trust Him when our backs are against the wall. Circumstances that go beyond our capabilities of solving them place us at the end of our rope and at God’s complete kindness and mercy, and this is exactly how He likes it.

The Bible says God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind. (2 Timothy 1:7) Therefore do not fear the trials and tribulations that are sure to come your way. If you are faithful to God in the test and trust in His Word, you will see His unlimited power manifested like never before. Just as the children of Israel were able to rejoice and sing a song of deliverance, you too will have your own testimony of God’s faithfulness, and you will be able to tell it for others to build their faith and yours.
