The Love Boat

“And behold, I Myself am bringing floodwaters on the earth, to destroy from under heaven all flesh in which is the breath of life; everything that is on the earth shall die. But I will establish My covenant with you [Noah]; and you shall go into the ark — you, your [three] sons, your wife, and your sons’ wives with you.” (Genesis 6:17-18)

The Love Boat is a popular TV series produced by Aaron Spelling for ABC from 1977-1986 about the luxury cruise ship The Pacific Princess and its many romantic voyages. But long before Aaron could spell, God already has a love boat built for us known as Noah’s ark. God made a covenant with Noah out of love in order to preserve the human race. This covenant involved Noah’s participation by building an ark. Noah only had his bagels, had never built an ark before, he lived on dry land and he’d never had a boat.

It was a totally new concept to Noah and the rest of the world to build a boat where there was no water in sight. Noah did not have to invent the ark because God gave him the plans in specific detail. Noah did not have to gather the animals or even talk to them like Dr Dolittle because God led them into the ark. Eight Is Enough, God even closed the door when all members of Noah’s family came on board, and then God made Hard Rain for 40 days and 40 nights to prove why the ark was needed. The covenant provided all Noah needed to complete his mission in life as the world's first and only arkeologist.

When God spoke to Noah to do build the ark, he needed only to respond to God's call to do it. Noah could rest in knowing the covenant made with God was going to be fulfilled if he fulfilled his part. The Bible is filled with covenants made between God and people. Six of those covenants were made with Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Moses, and David. The seventh was made with His own Son, Jesus Christ. God is always the strongest partner in a covenant relationship. If you have entered into a covenant relationship with God, you too can be assured that God will uphold His part.

God is faithful, and is committed to fulfilling His covenant with you and to fulfill His purposes in and through your life. It only requires one thing on your part, obedience as you study and meditate on the Word of God day and night. God will even provide the grace and faith to help you fulfill your part of the covenant. Each of us has a covenant with God, but we also enter into covenants with others in our lives. God has given us the example to follow and He has called each of us to be not promise breakers or contract breachers, but covenant keepers.
