The Quiet American

“Do not let your adornment be merely outward — arranging the hair, wearing gold, or putting on fine apparel — rather let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the incorruptible beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is very precious in the sight of God.” (1 Peter 3:3-4)

In the 2002 movie The Quiet American based on the Graham Greene novel, Brendan Fraser is a CIA agent who tries to obtain information about colonial Vietnam from British expatriate Michael Caine to prepare for the American involvement in Indochina as the French were leaving in the 1950s. Although some of us cannot be The Quiet American, a quiet and gentle spirit in God’s eyes is very precious for it is a beauty that is Simply Incorruptible.

For many years, the media and companies like Victoria’s Secret have been promoting physical beauty by revealing as much as possible and doing it in a lewd and lascivious manner. Lewd is sexually provocative in appearance promoting promiscuity and lascivious is defined in part as carnal and lustful. But God warned us in His Word not to lust after the overly sexualized bodies of women and men in James 1:14-16, “But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed. Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death. Do not be deceived, my beloved brethren.”

Again in 1 John 2:15-16 God told us in no uncertain terms, “Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world — the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life — is not of the Father but is of the world.” Models like Gisele Bundchen, Heidi Klum and even older ones like Cindy Crawford and Christine Brinkley possess wonderful physical beauty but it is inner beauty that really counts in the Kingdom of God.

Real beauty is the beauty of a gentle, humble, quiet and godly spirit, a spirit which is led by the Holy Spirit and obeys God’s Word. This inner spirit is what defines the essence of a person, and A Beautiful Mind is derived not by watching Russell Crowe, but from spending days and nights meditating on the Word of God to seek the face of God. The inner beauty of a godly person is a beauty that will not fade away because it is incorruptible and like wine, it will only get better with time. “Charm is deceitful and [physical] beauty is passing, but a woman [or man] who fears the LORD, she [or he] shall be praised.” (Proverbs 31:30)
