The Lone Ranger

“Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.” (Isaiah 41:10)

In the 1956 movie The Lone Ranger, Clayton Moore and his Indian sidekick Tonto try to stop the villain Kilgore from mining silver on a mountain sacred to the Indians. Even the legendary lone ranger is not really alone with his horse Silver and Tonto. Many of us have felt lonely or Home Alone at times. To take away the feeling of loneliness, we should try to remember the wonderful gifts of love that God has given us to overcome loneliness.

First of all, we have Jesus, who is always with us, even in the loneliest of times. Friends may come and go, but Jesus is a friend who sticks closer than a brother who promised, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” (Hebrews 13:5) Jesus said never, and no matter what time zone we are in, never is a long time.

Secondly, we have the Holy Spirit dwelling inside us to guide, teach, help, intercede, advocate, and comfort us. Jesus said, “And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper [or Comforter], that He may abide with you forever.” (John 14:16) DeBeers and James Bond may want us to think that Diamonds Are Forever, but forever in God's eye is a very, very, very long time.

Third, we have the Bible or the Word of God. We have all 66 books from Genesis to Revelation to teach us God’s ways and help us think God's thoughts. In Psalm 119:114 the psalmist says, “You are my hiding place and my shield; I hope in Your word.” Mark Wahlberg could only tell us The Truth About Charlie and Madonna may show us Truth Or Dare, but God’s Word contains all the truth, faith and hope that we need to know Him, to live a prosperous and victorious life, to know the way to eternal life and heaven, and to get our needs met.

Unlike Tom Cruise in A Few Good Men, with God’s help we can handle the truth. Then we have God’s angels, which are real and much more powerful than Charlie’s Angels, working at Full Throttle to serve and protect us. And last but not least, we have prayer 24 hours a day. Through prayer, we get the hook up directly with God the Father in heaven who is mindful of each of our concerns. God is everywhere, and He is right there beside us, and we can trust Him never to let us down or fail us. God has given us all these gifts to combat loneliness, to assure us that we are never alone so we don’t have to be Johnny Lonely or like Steve Martin in The Lonely Guy.
