The Princess Diaries

The king loved Esther more than all the other women, and she obtained grace and favor in his sight more than all the virgins; so he set the royal crown upon her head and made her queen instead of Vashti.” (Esther 2:17)

In the 2002 movie The Princess Diaries, a socially challenged but very bright 15-year-old girl being raised by a single mom discovers that she is the princess of the European country of Genovia. While the movie is pure Hollywood fiction, the book of Esther in the Bible tells the story of a young princess named Esther who was chosen by the king of Persia to be his queen. In the real life princess diaries, Esther spent an entire year in preparation as a princess before she was selected to be queen, and she was chosen by God to accomplish His purpose. For six months Esther was bathed with oil of myrrh and then another six months with perfumes and preparations for beautifying women. (Esther 2:12)

The oil is symbolic of God’s anointing. Just as Esther was prepared and anointed to be the queen of Persia, it is important for each of us to be prepared and anointed by the Holy Spirit for the work God has called us to do. When we’re anointed and prepared like Esther was, we can change the course of destiny no matter what obstacles we face.

As a result of Esther’s preparation, she was able to save the entire Jewish people from destruction. There were many other beautiful women who were also prepared just as Esther was and who were possibly even more beautiful than Esther. But she was the one princess who was chosen by the king, as well as handpicked by God Himself, to save the Jews. Her cousin Mordecai said, “Yet who knows whether you have come to the kingdom for such a time as this?” (Esther 4:14)

When a wicked man named Haman, who was Hitler, Dr Evil and Mini Me all rolled into one, hatched a plot to destroy all the Jews in the land long before the Nazis came up with the Final Solution, Esther went before the king to plead for the lives of her people, and they were miraculously spared. God is no respecter of persons, and He can prepare and anoint you just as He did Esther. You may not be a princess and you may not have a diary, but you are not an accident, and you’re here on earth at this particular time on purpose. You’re chosen for the same reason Esther was chosen, to accomplish God’s will, to spread the gospel of salvation, and to bring hope, blessing and deliverance to the people He puts in your life.
