Two for the Road

“Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their labor. For if they fall, one will lift up his companion. But woe to him who is alone when he falls, for he has no one to help him up. Again, if two lie down together, they will keep warm; but how can one be warm alone?” (Ecclesiastes 4:9-11)

Two for the Road is the 1967 Audrey Hepburn classic which uses multiple parallel flashbacks to chronicle a couple’s 12-year marriage as they drive through the countryside of France. Long before the movie Two for the Road was made, God already made us to need others on the road of life. We may not discover this until we fail in a business, a marriage, a friendship, or a commercial relationship. We are incomplete without the ongoing input from others into our lives.

Hollywood may have The Independent Spirit Awards, but an independent spirit is one of the most detestable sins in God’s eyes because it is the highest form of pride. “By pride comes nothing but strife, but with the well-advised is wisdom.” (Proverbs 13:10) The truth is, God has made each of us so that we have only so many gifts and talents. God did not give any of us ALL of the available gifts. Therefore, we need to depend on others and to humbly trust others to complete us where we are deficient.

In show business Batman had Robin, the Lone Ranger had Tonto, Simon had Garfunkel, Butch Cassidy had the Sundance Kid, Bogart had Bacall, Ben had J.Lo, and Dr Evil had Mini Me. In the Bible Moses had Joshua, David had Jonathan, Paul had Silas, and even Jesus had the 12 disciples. Two heads are definitely better than one, so who has God placed in your life to complete you and to make you into the person God intended for you to be?

Perhaps it is a spouse or a neighbor. Perhaps it is a pastor or a close friend. Perhaps it is a business partner or a protege. Don’t be Home Alone and don’t be like Tom Hanks on the Road to Perdition. Bob Hope had Bing Crosby on the Road to Rio, to Singapore, to Bali, to Zanzibar, to Morocco, and to Utopia. Life is tough enough and you don’t want to be alone like Mad Max as the Road Warrior. If you lack a companion on the Highway to Heaven, try to seek someone out who can add sugar, spice and everything nice into your life. If you have someone like this, thank God profusely and tell him or her how much you appreciate the role he or she plays in your life.
