A Simple Plan

“For I know the thoughts [or plans] that I think toward you, says the LORD, thoughts of peace [shalom or wholeness, nothing missing, nothing broken] and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.” (Jeremiah 29:11)

In the 1998 movie A Simple Plan, Bill Paxton and Billy Bob Thornton are two brothers who find a bag of money who had a simple plan to hide and use the money but it leads to many problems. For some people, a simple plan for real meaning in life is running for governor of California, the next Bali vacation, a corner office, a bigger house, a newer car, or a younger wife. It is a life based on Carnal Knowledge and pleasurable experiences.

Many people have worked their entire life to gain a Robin Leach Lifestyle of the Rich and Famous only to find a life that has no peace, that is empty and devoid of meaning. King Solomon was a man who had nothing withheld from him. He was a wise ruler, a great builder, a rich businessman, and a greedy lover of women. Every imaginable pleasure was his, but he discovered that these things alone could not satisfy the human soul. Bob Hope is gone, but the prophet Jeremiah reminds us that God has a simple but wonderful plan for us, and His plan is to prosper us with peace and to deliver us from evil, to give us a future and a hope.

The Bible says that God gives us richly ALL things to enjoy (1 Timothy 6:17), but His beautiful creation can so easily become a prison of emptiness if He is not in the center of it. The Apostle Paul said there is only one way to find meaning and purpose in life: “that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him, the eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, and what is the exceeding greatness of His power toward us who believe.” (Ephesians 1:17-19)

Knowing God by spending time in His Word brings the only real meaning and purpose to the human soul. You may be busy with work, school or family, but you should make it a priority to spend time each day getting to know God in a more intimate way so that He can give you His peace or wholeness. Then, and only then, will you discover not only real meaning and purpose in life, but also God’s simple plan that give you a future and a blessed hope.
