American
Wedding
On
the third day there was a wedding in Cana in Galilee, and the mother
of Jesus was there. Now both Jesus and His disciples were invited to
the wedding. And when they ran out of wine, the mother of Jesus said
to Him, They have no wine. (John 2:1-3)
American Wedding is the 2003 final sequel to the American Pie trilogy
where Jim and Michelle gather their family and friends for their wedding.
While the pie didn’t hit the fan at Jason Biggs’ wedding or Julia Roberts’
My Best Friend’s Wedding, anyone who has ever planned a wedding knows
how important it is to have everything just right, even with J.Lo as
The Wedding Planner and Adam Sandler as The Wedding Singer. In Jesus’
time, weddings were well-planned events that could last for days. But
a wedding Jesus attended at Cana developed a major problem, the host
ran out of wine.
The story of Jesus
first miracle, that of turning water into wine, is found in John 2:1-10.
After learning that the wine was gone, Jesus instructed the hosts
servants to Step Into Liquid and fill six large stone pots that the
Jews used for purification to the brim with water. Even with such ridiculous
instructions, they obeyed Jesus because His mother told the servants,
Whatever He says to you, do it.’ (John 2:5) And then He said to
them, Draw some out now, and take it to the master of the feast.
And they took it (John 2:8).
Jesus’ timing was perfect, because He did not create new wine before
its time. When the master of the feast tasted the wine, he complimented
the bridegroom for saving the best for last, for waiting until well
into the celebration to bring out the good wine (John 2:9-10). The turning
of water into wine was the opposite of what happened when Moses turned
water into blood as a curse against the Egyptians. (Exodus 7:14-20.)
The blood was a symbol of destruction, curses, and death. But Jesus
took the same water and turned it into wine, a symbol of life, joy,
celebration, and happiness.
This is much more than
just a story of how Jesus turned water into wine at a wedding. It shows
that in His very first miracle Jesus brought us into a new relationship
with God, a very personal relationship where we are children and heirs
of God. (Romans 8:17) It tells of what God really wants for us, no more
curses, from Pirates of the Caribbean’s The Curse of the Black Pearl to
Woody Allen’s The Curse of the Jade Scorpion, but only the promises of
blessings, of joy unspeakable and full of glory, of a new wine of the
Holy Spirit that fills our lives.
