Natural Born Killers

“Thus you have made the commandment of God [or the Word of God] of no effect by your tradition [man-made rules of religion, beliefs, items and gestures not authorized by the Word of God].” (Matthew 15:6)

In the 1994 Oliver Stone movie Natural Born Killers, Woody Harrelson and Juliette Lewis are two victims of traumatized childhoods who become lovers and psychopathic serial killers irresponsibly glorified by the mass media. While Woody and Juliette are natural born killers, SARS, AIDS, cancer, heart and lung disease are some of real the killers that are killing many in the world. But there is a far more deadly killer prowling in the Church today and it has destroyed countless more lives over the centuries than any of us can imagine. It’s called tradition. Traditions rob believers of their healing because they steal the power from the promises of God.

The first tradition that says it’s not always God’s will to heal you. But the truth from the Word of God is it is God’s will to heal you. It says so in His Word in Isaiah 53:5. If you don’t believe that it is, then you can’t pray in faith believing you’ll receive. You’re like the lazy farmer who sits on his John Deere tractor and says, “I believe in crops, but I won’t sow any seed. I’ll just believe, and if it’s God’s will, my harvest will come.” That farmer who is too cheap to buy seeds will never see his harvest. Faith is the seed of healing, and if you don’t sow it, it won’t grow. A prayer that says, “If it be your will” won’t produce a healing harvest because you must know without a doubt that healing is always God’s will for you.

Another tradition we hear is that healing has passed away with Jesus and the apostles, and that there are no miracles today, not even on 42nd Street. But the Word of God clearly proves that’s not true. In Exodus 15:26, God says, “I am the LORD who heals you.” God also tells us that He does not change (Malachi 3:6), and He has never changed since the beginning of time. For healing to pass away, God would have to change or pass away, and that will never happen.

The third dangerous tradition is God gets glory from believers being sick. Imagine how ridiculous this sounds because that tradition totally violates the Word of God. The Bible says that people gave glory to God when they saw the lame walk and the blind see. God is a good God, and He receives glory from your healing, not your pain, and He takes pleasure in your prosperity (Psalm 35:27), not poverty. The world is looking for a way out of sickness, poverty, oppression and disease, not a way into it. So let’s spread the good news of salvation, break down those traditions as we study the Word and deliver the world from the most dangerous killer of all.
