The Recruit

“For you have need of endurance, so that after you have done the will of God, you may receive the promise.” (Hebrews 10:36)

In the 2003 movie The Recruit, Colin Farrell is a brilliant young CIA trainee who is asked by his mentor Al Pacino to help find a mole in the Agency. God also recruits, but when He calls His servants into service, there is often much trial and tribulation. There are many examples in the Bible where God makes His presence known through circumstances that tax the person to his very soul. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego were thrown into the fiery furnace heated seven times hotter than before.

Moses was banished to the desert for 40 years. Jacob was forced to work 7 more years for his beloved Rachel. Daniel was thrown into the lions’ den just for praying. David was forced to flee King Saul for many years and lived as a fugitive, even hiding in a cave. The Apostle Paul was stricken blind on the Road to Damascus, and Peter was in despair when he denied Jesus not once, not twice, but three times after the crucifixion. It may seem strange to us that God uses such incredible adversity to prepare His servants for service, but this is God’s way to recruit people.

Even the patriarch Abraham had to wait 25 years for the son of promise Isaac. God knows that the human heart is incapable of voluntarily stepping into painful situations that take us beyond our comfort zone. God intentionally brings us between Iraq and a hard place to test us and to drive us deeper into the soil of His grace. In arid regions, trees cannot survive unless their roots grow deeper into the water table. Once they reach the water, these trees become stronger than any tree elsewhere. Their intricate root systems ensure that they can withstand any storm, even The Perfect Storm.

In the same way, God brings us into extremely difficult situations in order to prove His power and drive our spiritual roots deeper. God may take you through the tough times when you will question His love for you. In such times, you must cling to Him tightly as you spend time in His Word so that you can see His purpose and faithfulness. Do not throw away your confidence in the promises of the Word of God, for you will be richly rewarded in due time.
