Camp

“ ‘If the LORD delights in us, then He will bring us into this land and give it to us, a land which flows with milk and honey. Only do not rebel against the LORD, nor fear the people of the land, for they are our bread; their protection has departed from them, and the LORD is with us. Do not fear them.’ And all the congregation said to stone them with stones. Now the glory of the LORD appeared in the tabernacle of meeting before all the children of Israel.” (Numbers 14:8-10).

In the 2003 movie Camp, a songwriter goes to work at a musical camp for young performers after a series of Broadway flops and found inspiration for a new production. Sometimes in life we have to be like Tom Cruise in Minority Report and stand up against the majority in our own camp for a cause that isn’t popular. In Exodus, God brought the children of Israel out of Egypt and promised He would lead them into a land of milk and honey.

Leaving Egypt was more difficult for them than Leaving Las Vegas was for Nicolas Cage. They could no longer do things the old way, for the old ways didn’t work in the desert. God provided for them with manna from heaven during this journey, but they somehow forgot what God had said. Their discomfort changed their belief about God. Four men, Moses, Aaron, Joshua and Caleb, believed what God said and were willing to stand but the crowd from their own camp wanted to stone them.

Joshua and Caleb had spied the land long before Brad Pitt could play Spy Game with Robert Redford. They believed God and challenged the crowd. They seemed to know that if God was not happy they would not enter the Promised Land. And indeed those who complained did not even see the Promised Land. Only Joshua and Caleb and a new generation saw the fulfillment of God’s promise. If God has called you to stand for a cause bigger than yourself, then you will surely have opposition to His call. And most likely it will even come from those in your own camp.

But if God has called you, then He will make a way when there appears to be no way. God has already opened the way and will show you the path of life (Psalm 16:11), but you must walk in faith, believe in His Word, and be spiritually joined with Him in order to evict the squatters and take back the land.
