8 Simple Rules for Happiness

He who heeds the word wisely [he who obeys the Word of God] will find good, and whoever trusts in the LORD, happy is he.” (Proverbs 16:20)

In the 2002-2003 TV comedy 8 Simple Rules for Dating My Teenage Daughter, John Ritter and Katey Sagal are parents of three teenage girls who must deal with the dating scene and social transformation of their children. While John Ritter has 8 simple rules for someone dating his girls, God has 8 simple rules for our happiness and Eight Is Enough. No one can have true happiness and peace unless they know their sins are forgiven and that they have assurance of eternal life in heaven with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Even though many are not as happy as they can be, here are 8 simple rules for happiness which may be of help to you:

    1. Give something to someone with no strings attached or do kindness and forget it.

    2. Laugh often, for laughter is the best medicine.

    3. Give thanks to God all the time as you study His Word.

    4. Spend time with the aged, for their experience is a priceless source of wisdom.

    5. Pray, or you’ll lose the way.

    6. Work with intensity and vigor.

    7. Plan as though you’ll live forever, because your soul will From Here To Eternity.

    8. Live as though you’ll die tomorrow, because your body will cease to function someday.

Psalm 146:5-7 says, “Happy is he who has the God of Jacob for his help, whose hope is in the LORD his God, who made heaven and earth, the sea and all that is in them; who keeps truth forever, who executes justice for the oppressed, who gives food to the hungry. The LORD gives freedom to the prisoners.”

Some people are not happy because they forget who God is, how powerful He is, how much He loves us, and how capable He is to take care of us. Obedience to the Word of God and trust in God are keys to successful living according to Proverbs 16:20. The old hymn makes it even more clear: “Trust and obey, for there’s no other way, to be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey.” Jesus describes the 8 different kinds of people who are happy or blessed in His Sermon on the Mount in Matthew 5:3-10. Even a popular song exhorts us to “Don’t worry, be happy,” and that should be true every day for the obedient and trusting believers who know the 8 simple rules.
