A Few Good Men

“And everyone who was in distress, everyone who was in debt, and everyone who was discontented gathered to him. So he became captain over them. And there were about four hundred men with him.” (1 Samuel 22:2)

Have you ever been in distress? Or in debt? Or discontented? Or two out of three? Or all three? Imagine what David must have felt in the years after his anointing by the prophet Samuel as the next king of Israel. He spent many years running and hiding from the jealous King Saul. He was on the run, hiding in caves like Osama. But God was beginning to bring a few good men to support David. But what kind of men? The down-and-out, the losers-R-us. God chose to give David not the good, but the bad and the ugly. He gave David something worse than the dirty dozen, those DDD who were in distress, in debt and discontented with life. David, with the burden-removing, yoke-destroying anointing of God upon him, converted those seemingly defeated men into the best fighting force of their day, for they never caved in.

David, the HMS Invincible, never lost a battle as king of Israel, quite a feat for a bunch of nameless lowlifes! David was like the General Electric of his day, for he brought good things to life. A few of David’s men became an elite force known as David’s Mighty Men. They were the elite of the elite, the Special Forces, the Rangers, the Navy Seals, the Green Berets, the commandos. They were exceptional warriors, they were the few and the proud, but not the Marines. David spent time meditating on the truth of God’s Word and guided his men. Unlike Tom Cruise, they know the truth of God’s Word, and they CAN handle the truth.

The nation of Israel has 12 tribes who came from the loins of Jacob. Jesus the Messiah took a few good men who weren’t the cream of the crop either. He built His life, ministry and taught the truth of God’s Word into these men, which resulted in 12 apostles who turned the world upside down. Are you one of God’s few good men or women? Are you investing your time, talent and treasure to build up other mighty men or women? Are you faithfully supporting ministries who are doing God’s work to preach the Word to the lost and dying?

David and Jesus set the example of what can be done when we sow generously into others. God does EXTRAordinary things through ordinary men or women who give Him all the glory and who serve His purpose. Ask God to use your life to be a mighty man or woman of valor for a cause greater than yourself, to fulfill the Great Commission, to preach the gospel of salvation to billions so that God can establish His covenant. God downsized Gideon’s army from 32,000 to a mere 300 men to defeat the Midianites. God is such a BIG God that a few good men is all He needs.
