The Sound of Music

“And when he [King Jehoshaphat] had consulted with the people, he appointed those who should sing to the LORD and who should praise the beauty of holiness, as they went out before the army and were saying, Praise the LORD, for His mercy [chesed] endures forever” (2 Chronicles 20:21)

Praise is music to God’s ears and praise precedes victory. The Bible tells us in 2 Chronicles 20 that a multitude were marching against Israel. The army of Israel was so outnumbered they didn’t know what to do. So they fasted and prayed until they received a word from God. “Do not be afraid nor dismayed because of this great multitude; for the battle is not yours, but God’s.” (verse 15) In response to that Word, they put together a praise choir, a hallelujah chorus. Instead of Navy Seals, Rangers, commandos, scouts and recon missions, they appointed singers and praisers and sent them out in front of the army. And when that choir began to sing, the Word of God tells us that the LORD set ambushments against Ammon, Moab and Mount Seir who had come against Judah, and they were defeated. And they did it all without Julie Andrews and her children.

When the battle was over, not one Israelite had fallen, and not one of their enemies had escaped. When they came to take the spoil, they found so many goods, jewelries, garments and other precious things that it literally took them three full days to bring it home. They named that place the Valley of Berachah, or the Valley of Blessings. (verse 26) Now, that’s the sweet smell of victory! And it all began with praise, and with praise come the victory and the blessing, tons of it. Are you looking for total victory today? Then stand up and shout, “Hallelujah, Glory be to God!” You’re probably in the same situation those Israelites were in. You have an army marching against you, an army of debt, sickness, oppression, brokenness, lack, and persecution. But Jesus has already defeated them all. He won that battle for you on Resurrection Morning of the Third Day.

All that’s left for you to do is trust God and praise Him at all times. Give God lip service, make some music and sound out those praises today. Speak them, sing them, declare them in the face of your enemy. Once the enemy hears them, he doesn’t even stand a chance. You don’t have to be Fallin’ like Alicia Keys with Songs in A Minor for with God any song you can sing in your heart to praise Him will do. You can Walk On like Bono and leave all the defeat of your circumstances, and U2, behind. You don’t have to win a Grammy or go platinum to achieve victory. Because of what Jesus did at the cross, you can have victory, prosperity, blessings, protection and salvation—and you can have it ALL, for a song.
