GREGORY, Winston (278177, Lieutenant)

b. 1919, Buckinghamshire  d. Friday 5th January 1945 (aged 26)

An officer in the local territorial regiment, Winston had first gone into action during the D-Day landings with the Green Howards.  Later, towards the end of 1944, he was seconded to the 1st battalion East Lancashire Regiment when that particular unit became short of officers.

The Allied advance faltered for a time during the Ardennes Offensive in January, and it looked for a short time like the German forces might turn the tide once more.  Winston was caught up in this attack, and it was here where he fell just as the Allies crossed the French border into Germany, only a few miles from Luxembourg.  He was wounded in battle, and transported to a hospital in neutral Luxembourg where he died just a few days later; he was laid to rest in Hotton War Cemetery.

Peter had studied at University and was accredited with the letters M.R.I.C.S. after his name which give the indicator that he was a surveyor in his civilian life before being conscripted.  He was the son of Leonard and Beryl Gregory, of Filey.
