HALL, Peter Mowat (172623, Second Lieutenant)

b. 1913, Berkshire       d. Monday 29th December 1941 (aged 28)

A relative newcomer to Filey, Peter and his wife Marigold had only arrived in the town in the late 1930’s when he opened the White Lodge Hotel, which was previously known as South Crescent Villa.  He was well known throughout the area as he played centre half for Filey Town and also played cricket in the Huddersfield League, near to where he had previously lived.  Peter had also been educated at Malvern College where he had passed with honours.

When he was conscripted, Peter joined the Royal Artillery and spent the first two years of the war serving in the ranks before he was gazetted in early 1941.  At the end of his officer training joined the 65th Light Anti-Aircraft Regiment and was in charge of the 196th Battery.  This unit was based in Northern Africa and at the time of Peter’s death the El-Alamein campaign was just in its initial phases.

Although he was wounded in the field, Peter was transported to the Heliopolis Hospital in Egypt where he eventually died of these wounds.

Peter was the son of Norman and Dorothy Hall of Cold Ash, Berkshire and this was where he grew up until his move to Yorkshire.
