HARRISON, Robert (4510697, Corporal)
b. 1905, Filey d. Thursday 23rd January 1947 (aged
42)
The life and times of this man have
been unfortunately lost over the years, and the only testament to his war
service can be found on the town memorial itself and on the headstone a modest
grave tucked away in a far corner of St. Oswald’s churchyard.
Robert was a Corporal in the (Prince
of Wales Own) West Yorkshire Regiment but at some point was wounded during the
war on active service. This wound must
have been so severe that he was released from the Armed Services and sent back
to Filey; two years after the war had ended he succumbed to these wounds and
was buried where he lies today. He is
commemorated by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (C.W.G.C.) but they did
not pay for his headstone and so consequently his final resting does not have
the standard war grave appearance. These
discrepancies have made it virtually impossible to provide any more information
than what has already been given except that Robert was married to Vera and the
couple lived in Filey up until the time of Robert’s death.
